Different Methods of Addiction Therapy

Different Methods of Addiction Therapy

Addiction therapy involves many different approaches. Medical detox and rehab are the most traditional methods. These modes of therapy are often supplemented with additional forms of therapy – holistic methods. It’s important to note that holistic addiction therapy should not be the only form of treatment. Holistic methods should only be used in conjunction with medically supervised treatment.

Traditional Addiction Therapy

Medical detox followed by rehab is the safest, most traditional form of addiction therapy. The goal of medically supervised recovery is to keep you as comfortable and safe as possible. Users can experience many different side effects and challenges during the detox process from alcohol and drugs. Doctors can prescribe different medications to ease discomfort during the withdrawal process and address any co-occurring mental health conditions. Recovery shouldn’t mean suffering, and medically supervised addiction therapy ensures just that.

Physical Exercise

Working out and doing gentle movement to stay physically active can benefit your body and mind during addiction treatment. Working out releases endorphins and gives the brain a sense of reward, just like you would get during substance use. Channeling your urges and cravings into working out is a productive way to prevent relapse and stay motivated during addiction therapy. Physical exercise is an excellent holistic therapy method to pair with medically supervised treatment that strengthens your body and shifts your mentality.

Art Your Heart Out

The arts are incredibly healing. Whether you prefer art forms like drawing and painting or musical activities, being creative allows you to get your thoughts out of your head and onto paper. Feeling sad? Draw your thoughts. Having intense stress? Write about it. The arts are an outlet to heal your heart and express yourself. This is incredibly helpful in addiction therapy programs because it can cause feelings of relief and accomplishment. Arts can also be used as a communication tool. Not quite sure how to put thoughts into words? Express it through visual or auditory arts.

Find Your Favorite Activity

Everyone is different, just like everyone is in different stages of addiction. What works for one person may not work for another. It’s important to be open and honest with your treatment team to get the most out of your addiction therapy program. Whether you’re in residential rehab, intensive outpatient treatment, or a partial hospitalization program – the right therapy methods are out there for you. If you or someone you know is in need of addiction therapy or detox, connect with our admissions team and we can help you find the right fit.
