Addiction treatment has many phases, and after detox, rehabilitation begins. Alcohol rehab is an essential step in any sobriety journey. You only get what you give when it comes to treatment, and to get the most out of it you need to be open, honest, and willing to try new things – even if it makes you uncomfortable. We’ve laid out our top tips for getting the most out of alcohol rehab.
1. Pack Accordingly
Many people are unsure what to pack for alcohol rehab. You should pack comfortable clothing, a sweater or jacket, comfortable tennis shoes, a pair of sandals, and of course any undergarments you may need. As for toiletries, you want to bring the essentials such as a toothbrush & toothpaste, shower products, skincare, and light makeup if desired. During treatment you will be participating in a variety of different activities, from group therapy to mindfulness exercises to excursions out into nature – you should be prepared for anything.
You will have some downtime to yourself where you can participate in structured programming or you can do an individual activity. You will not be able to use your phone or anything that connects to WiFi such as laptops or tablets, so we suggest bringing some books, a journal, coloring books, or anything you enjoy.
It’s important to be aware of what is not allowed in alcohol rehab. There are no weapons or drugs allowed, and all prescriptions must be in its original, labeled container with your name on it. You also cannot bring anything with alcohol as an ingredient – this includes hand sanitizer and mouthwash.
2. Be Open to the Unknown
Alcohol rehab is not going to be comfortable. Your treatment team will work to make the process as stress-free as possible, but you must be prepared to have some days that are harder than others. Changing your habits and behaviors does not come easily, and being committed to progress is essential to sobriety.
Along with being open with yourself, you should also be open and honest with the treatment team helping you. In order for them to be able to provide the best treatment possible, you need to be clear about what substances you have been taking, how long and to what extent. You must also be open about how you are feeling each day. Feeling sick? They can help. Having a craving urge? Not a problem, everyone experiences them – they can help you redirect. Experiencing depression or anxiety? Your team can help you work through those thoughts productively. There are ups and downs throughout alcohol rehab and beyond, but bad days do not make you a “failure,” if anything they will only make you stronger.
3. Take Advantage of All Opportunities
During alcohol rehab, you will have the opportunity to choose from many different programs and activities to supplement your treatment plan. To get the most out of your time in rehab, we suggest trying out any and everything that feels interesting. Want to try your hand at gardening? Give it a go! Always been interested in watercolor painting? It may become your new favorite hobby. These activities can be a form of holistic therapy that help you heal your mind, body, and soul through hands-on activities and tasks.
