Recovering from Meth Addiction

Recovering from Meth Addiction

Meth addiction is on the rise in the United States. Research from 2021 has shown that 6% of the American population aged 12 and older has tried meth at least once. Meth can be smoked, injected, swallowed, or snorted.

The stimulant increases brain activity and impacts the central nervous system, heightening the senses and nerves. This can result in high heart rate, body temperature, respiration, and even blood pressure. With meth addiction, the body becomes almost permanently stimulated – never getting a break from the substance. Recovering from meth addiction requires detox and rehab to rid the body of toxins and break the dependence.

Withdrawals from Meth Addiction

Meth is an incredibly potent drug, leading people to become dependent on it rapidly. It’s a stimulant, so when an individual stops using meth, they experience a hard “crash” period that can last several days. This is when withdrawal symptoms are at their worst. Withdrawal from meth addiction can last up to several weeks.

Medically supervised detox is the safest way to rid the body of meth. Medical detox enables doctors and other clinicians to prescribe medications to curb cravings and ease discomfort brought on by withdrawal. Likewise, in the event of serious cardiovascular or nervous system emergencies, doctors can intervene and prevent serious health risks or even death.

Symptoms that can be experienced during meth withdrawal include:

  • Fatigue
  • Increased appetite
  • Agitation
  • Insomnia
  • Excessive sweating
  • Paranoia
  • Hallucinations
  • Fever
  • Red, itchy eyes
  • Confusion
  • Nausea
  • Loss of motivation
  • Tremor
  • Suicidal thoughts
  • Stomach ache
  • Anxiety
  • Severe depression
  • Dehydration

These symptoms and their severity will vary from person to person, and how long a user has been in meth addiction.

Treatment for Meth Addiction

After detox is completed, the next step in recovery from meth addiction is to enter residential rehab. The goal of residential rehab after detox is to continue to build upon the coping mechanisms and sobriety strategies that are needed to continue recovery. In residential rehab, doctors, therapists, and other clinicians are available around the clock to provide care. In the event of a craving or trigger, clients are able to reach out and get support and care needed to stay strong.

Once an individual graduates from residential rehab for meth addiction, they will move into an outpatient program. Outpatient programs encourage clients to start putting their sober strategies to the test in real life applications. They are also able to reintegrate back into their community with the support of experienced recovery professionals. These programs can either be partial hospitalization programs or intensive outpatient treatment. Outpatient programs are designed to provide support while still encouraging independence in sobriety.
