Understanding Dual Diagnosis Treatment

What is Dual Diagnosis Treatment?

Dual diagnosis treatment exists to treat both substance use disorder and other mental health conditions at the same time. For many, mental health conditions are at the core of their drug and alcohol use. For example, someone who struggles with anxiety may turn to substance use to calm their nerves. These instances are called co-occurring disorders and dual diagnosis treatment is the way to treat both conditions at once.

What is Dual Diagnosis Treatment?

Dual diagnosis treatment looks different for each client, and depends on what co-occurring conditions are present. Mental health conditions that are treated include, but are not limited to:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Bipolar Disorder
  • Eating Disorders
  • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

Seeking treatment for any mental health condition can be intimidating. But substance use disorder caused by a co-occurring condition cannot be truly treated without addressing it. If dual diagnosis treatment is not done then the addiction treatment is less likely to be sustained.

The medical team on staff at Rise Above Treatment centers will assess the mental health status of every client and will determine what their diagnosis is and how it should be treated.

Dual diagnosis treatment is multifaceted and includes a combination of medical treatment, therapy, and holistic methods. Holistic treatment cannot be used alone for treatment, it must always be done with medical supervision. In most cases, detox must be done first before the rest of treatment can begin.

Dual Diagnosis Expectations

Even though each treatment plan will vary from client to client, there are many details that remain consistent. Dual diagnosis treatment will include:

  • Structured daily routine with group and individual therapy
  • Medical supervision and treatment for both mental health and substance use issues
  • Individualized treatment plans tailored to address co-occurring conditions
  • Community building in a supportive and safe environment
  • Integration of proven therapies such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT)
  • Opportunities for skill-building, education, and relapse prevention strategies
  • Access to psychiatric treatment and medication management

These activities and programs ensure that participants are ready to move into part-time treatment programs upon completion. This includes intensive outpatient treatment or partial hospitalization programs.
